It’s one of the most common questions we’re asked: “It’s a private lake. Do I still need a rod licence?” The short answer is yes. Here’s everything you need to know before your visit.
The rule in England and Wales
According to GOV.UK, you must have a rod fishing licence to fish for salmon, trout, freshwater fish, smelt or eel with a rod and line in England and Wales, and this applies on private waters too, including commercial fisheries and club lakes. A valid Environment Agency rod licence is also a condition of fishing at Felix Farm.
Licence vs day ticket: what’s the difference?
- Rod licence: issued by the Environment Agency. It gives you the legal right to use a rod and line. Licence money funds fish stocking, habitat improvements and anti-poaching work.
- Day ticket / permit: issued by the fishery. It gives you permission to fish that particular water. At Felix Farm this is your day or season ticket.

Please note: Felix Farm is not suitable for children under 13 unless accompanied by an adult, and no children are allowed without adult supervision. A carer who isn’t fishing doesn’t need a licence.
What type of licence do I need?
For trout, a trout and coarse licence is what you need, and it is the cheaper option. The salmon and sea trout licence is only needed if you’re fishing for those species. Licences are available for 1 day, 8 days or 12 months. If you plan to fish more than a few times a year, the annual licence is by far the best value. Check GOV.UK for current prices and concessions.
How many rods does it cover?
Fly fishing at Felix Farm is one rod, single fly only, so a standard licence covers you.
Where to buy
- Online at GOV.UK (“Buy a rod fishing licence”). This is the quickest option and you’ll get a licence number straight away.
- By phone from the Environment Agency.
Buy it before you set off, and keep your licence number handy on your phone in case you’re asked to show it.
What happens if I fish without one?
Environment Agency enforcement officers check licences at fisheries across the country. GOV.UK states you can be fined up to £2,500 if you cannot show a valid licence when asked.
Checklist before your visit
- Rod licence bought (free junior licence for 13–16s)
- Day ticket: sign in and pay at the fishery before fishing
- Hat and protective glasses (mandatory)
- Barbless or de-barbed hooks recommended if you’re catch-and-release fishing
